The Shoreditch by the Sea Coastal Escape You Need to Visit | Margate, Kent

If you’re looking for a UK coastal escape that swaps traditional seaside clichés for natural wine bars, independent restaurants, stylish hotels and seriously good food, Margate is the place to add to your list.

Just 1 hour 29 minutes from King’s Cross, you can step off the train and be on the seafront almost instantly.

It’s one of those places that feels effortlessly cool without trying too hard, a little bit like Shoreditch by the sea.

Margate has completely transformed into one of the UK’s most exciting foodie destinations.

Of course, there’s still the charm of a classic seaside town, but alongside the arcades and fish and chips, you’ll now find independent restaurants, natural wine bars, creative spaces and beautiful places to stay.

It’s the perfect destination if you’re looking for a coastal break with a little more style and substance.

One of the things I loved most about Margate was how easy it is to slow down.

Spend the morning exploring the town, wander along the seafront, or head to the beach for a paddle.

The shallow waters make it a brilliant spot for families, and there are also dog friendly beaches, making it a destination everyone can enjoy.

With beautiful Airbnbs and boutique hotels like No.42, Margate is ideal for everything from a spontaneous day trip to a relaxed weekend away.

The restaurant scene is where Margate really shines.

Forget the idea that a seaside escape has to mean fish and chips, this is a place for natural wine bars, ingredient led cooking and restaurants that wouldn’t look out of place in London.

One of the highlights of my visit was Sargasso, perched on Margate Harbour Arm with beautiful sea views and a menu designed for sharing.

The food was exactly what I want from a coastal restaurant, fresh, seasonal and full of personality.

Highlights included salami, crisps and Cantabrian anchovies with the silkiest taramasalata, a refreshing watermelon and tomato salad with delicate orange shavings, and soft serve ice cream finished with a shot of espresso.

Of course, the wine was just as memorable.

I enjoyed a beautifully crisp Verdicchio from Terre Silvate, fresh, vibrant and the perfect match for a sunny day by the sea.

Margate feels like a destination that has found the perfect balance.

It has the charm of a traditional seaside town, but with a modern creative energy that makes it feel exciting and different.

Whether you’re visiting for the restaurants, the wine bars, the beaches, the independent shops or simply to enjoy a slower pace of life by the coast, Margate is a brilliant UK weekend escape.
