Tuscany’s Most Underrated DOCG White Wine

One of the most underrated white wines in Italy — and a personal favourite of mine- is Vernaccia di San Gimignano. In a region globally celebrated for powerful reds, this historic Tuscan white quietly holds its own, offering depth, texture and remarkable ageing potential. If you’re searching for the best white wines of Tuscany, this is where I’d start.

Expect aromas of lemon peel, ripe pear, crushed almonds and wild Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it’s dry, structured and quietly powerful, with a distinctive saline edge that lingers long after the first sip.

That fresh, salty finish is no accident. Vernaccia is grown on ancient marine soils surrounding the medieval hilltop town of San Gimignano, where fossil-rich limestone and clay give the wine its savoury backbone.

Warm Tuscan days build concentration and texture, while cool nights preserve acidity and lift. The result is a sophisticated, food-friendly white wine that pairs beautifully with seafood, truffle dishes and aged pecorino.

It is also Tuscany’s only DOCG white wine, a status that reflects both its heritage and quality. Yet despite this, Vernaccia di San Gimignano remains surprisingly under the radar compared to Brunello or Super Tuscans, which, for those in the know, makes discovering a great bottle feel all the more special.

I’m sipping it here in Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of rolling hills and cypress-lined roads. Steam rises from nearby thermal waters, medieval stone villages glow amber in the late afternoon light, and the winter air feels crisp against the skin. With a glass of Vernaccia in hand, there’s a warmth that builds slowly, textured, enveloping, almost like a quiet embrace in liquid form.

On this particular stay, I’m based at Hotel La Posta, where spa waters and sweeping views make the experience all the more immersive. Tuscany may be famous for red wine, but standing here with this glass, it’s clear that one of Italy’s most compelling white wines deserves just as much attention.
