Celebrating #WomeninWine is so important as we strive to create a more inclusive and diverse wine industry where all voices and perspectives are heard equally.
This #IWD2023, I want to give a shout out to Sue Hodder, one of Australia’s best-known winemakers who has been producing world-class wines at Wynns Coonawarra Estate for more than 25 years.
Sue has been very vocal about calling out inequality in the wine world - 60% of graduates are women but only 13% of women are getting jobs in the industry. We hope there will be no barriers to women working in wine in the future.
According to the most recent statistics available from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), as of 2021, approximately 10% of global winemakers are women. However, this figure can vary significantly depending on the region and country.
In some countries, such as Spain and Italy, female winemakers are less common, whereas in others, such as the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, there are a growing number of females. It’s getting better but our industry is still male-dominated and difficult to access in some areas.
There are so many extremely talented female winemakers and aspiring female winemakers today. These women are focused on producing outstanding wines and they also care about how to make wine in more sustainable ways.
There are also the many wonderful female wine writers, bloggers, media stars and influencers who are experts in the field and contribute greatly to the wine world and help shine spot lights on talented female winemakers.
