    30 September 2026

The vineyard visit nobody wanted to leave

September brought two rather wonderful settings for events: a vineyard in Kent where guests chose to stay beyond the planned finish, and a London terrace with a few unexpected visitors. I’ve also been thinking about the wines that could become tomorrow’s icons.

Can you tell the difference between a £10 wine and a £100 one?

I spent a few days at Taste of London, working the Wines of Bourgogne tent. From the outside, events like this can look quite glamorous. What people don't always see is how much energy they take. This year, the food producers were brilliant - from Oblix to Roti King - and the crowds were bigger than last year. The buzz was fantastic, and Jack Daniels made their Taste of London debut (which wasn't something I saw coming!).

Last week I hosted a journalist tasting for around 20 guests at Gemcorp's office in partnership with Rostrum… and ten minutes before anyone arrived, I changed the setup entirely. What I did was small but the difference it made to the event certainly wasn't.

September is closer than you think

Mid-June already, and if you work in professional services, your thoughts are probably starting to turn to September. The summer lull is almost here but it won't last long, and the autumn calendar fills up faster than anyone expects. Here are two things I'd encourage you to be thinking about now.

A different side of Napa, featuring Lisa Togni among wine barrels

    10 June 2026

Three things on my mind this month

My June Platinum Magazine article is out, and it completely changed my view of Napa When people think about Napa Valley, they often think big, bold wines with equally big price tags. But after interviewing Lisa Togni of Philip Togni Vineyard, I realised there’s another side to California wine entirely. Her wines are about restraint, freshness and balance rather than power. Organic farming. Dry farming. Lower alcohol. Wines designed for the table rather than simply making a statement. One wine I keep thinking about? Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon Not an everyday bottle (£89+ certainly isn’t everyday), but actually a brilliant wine to experience at one of my corporate events. Because sometimes memorable hospitality means introducing guests to something they simply wouldn’t order themselves. This is the sort of wine that creates conversation. Guests remember discovering something new, and experiencing a bottle they may never otherwise have opened.

Why Most Client Events are Forgettable (and the Wines I'm Drinking)

What actually makes a client event memorable? Not the venue, not the budget, and rarely the wine list on its own. On the blog this week, I've written about a recent tasting for Taylor Wessing, where structuring the wines around the firm's own identity turned the evening into something guests were still quoting on the way out.

The Prosecco Rule I Use & Rethink Red Wine Headaches

There are two questions I’m asked constantly at events. Not the complicated ones. The practical ones. How much Prosecco do I actually need? Why does red wine give me a headache? Both come up again and again, whether I’m hosting for 15 people or 150. Here’s the short version, based on what I see in real rooms.

What Smart Clients are Booking Right Now (& What Most Events Still Get Wrong)

There’s been a shift in what clients are asking for. Less interest in “just doing something nice”.
More focus on: will this actually work? Because most corporate events look good on paper… and then fall flat in the room. People stay with who they know.
Hover near the bar.
Leave earlier than planned. So here’s what’s working right now, and why.

International Women’s Day: The Women Behind the Bottle

    Women make extraordinary wine.
They always have. What has changed is visibility. This week, I’m inviting you to do something simple: when you pick a bottle, ask who made it. Because behind so wine labels I pour at events are women leading estates, rebuilding vineyards, challenging tradition and quietly outperforming expectations.

Turning your events from good to great

Working with global firms such as BNY Mellon, Ropes & Gray, Freshfields and Paul Hastings, I see the same pressure point repeatedly. It is not about choosing the right venue, theme or date (vital as all those elements are). It’s about: • building brand reputation in front of clients • ensuring senior partners feel confident hosting • delivering something polished without adding risk • creating the right tone for the firm When you deliver a great event, no one notices the mechanics. This is where I come in.

My honest take on non-alcoholic wine and what I’ve actually enjoyed So, what are my thoughts after a month of Sober October? Botivo is still, in my view, the best product on the market, I absolutely love it. But this month I also fell for Everleaf, a beautifully made non-alcoholic spirit. My favourite of the range is Marine: bright, coastal and refreshing and when I was at The Avery Bar in the City, I actually ordered it instead of a gin and tonic.

Forget Bounce - try Brunello instead! Let’s level up your events

I’ve noticed more companies booking “experience” venues like Bounce or Flight Club for their corporate events. But is ‘organised fun’ ever really fun? Well, maybe! But, let’s be honest, these spots are probably more suited to hen parties or Friday-night-with-the-girls territory. They never quite deliver the experience you want when entertaining clients.

    Autumn Wines & Festive Preparations

Autumn is a wonderful time for wine as we move away from the light crisp wines of summer to the fuller-bodied bottles that suit the colder weather. My autumn has been was filled with wines from around the world, including some old friends and some new bottles being tasted for the very first time!

Woman holding two pumpkins beneath three jack-o'-lantern decorations

    30 October 2023

Hello Autumn - What a time for the world of food and wine!

It’s autumn and what a time for the food and wine world, to me this time of year always feels like Nature’s larder opens up with a fresh new set of ingredients to play with. Yes, it may be a little wetter than we’d like but I love the crisp mornings and cool evenings. On the stove you can feel the change of seasons: the jars of beans and lentils have come down from the larder shelf; there is meat cooking on the bones and for those of you that love them, it’s truffle time of year! So, what does all this mean for your wine choices? Well, for reds it’s going to be those velvety Italian numbers, Barbera and Dolcetto, or perhaps a fresh and herby cabernet franc to go with game dishes, stews or braises. And for the whites, put down those zingy summer sips and embrace the words ‘oak aged’ on the label for this time of year. Here, I’m thinking of grape varieties such as chardonnay, semillon, marsanne, fiano and perhaps chenin blanc (the northern Rhône has some fabulous examples, as do South Africa and Australia). These whites have a full texture, plenty of weight and offer a rich mouthfeel. Perfect for the shorter days and cooler weather.
