    Hello Autumn!
What a time for the world of food and wine!

It’s autumn and what a time for the food and wine world, to me this time of year always feels like Nature’s larder opens up with a fresh new set of ingredients to play with.  Yes, it may be a little wetter than we’d like but I love the crisp mornings and cool evenings. On the stove you can feel the change of seasons: the jars of beans and lentils have come down from the larder shelf; there is meat cooking on the bones and for those of you that love them, it’s truffle time of year!

So, what does all this mean for your wine choices? Well, for reds it’s going to be those velvety Italian numbers, Barbera and Dolcetto, or perhaps a fresh and herby cabernet franc to go with game dishes, stews or braises.  And for the whites, put down those zingy summer sips and embrace the words ‘oak aged’ on the label for this time of year.  Here, I’m thinking of grape varieties such as chardonnay, semillon, marsanne, fiano and perhaps chenin blanc (the northern Rhône has some fabulous examples, as do South Africa and Australia). These whites have a full texture, plenty of weight and offer a rich mouthfeel. Perfect for the shorter days and cooler weather.

MY TOP 3: HALLOWEEN WINES over three wine bottles

    My Halloween Wine Recommendations
Finally, here are my top three bottles for the spookiest time of year, guaranteed not to give you a fright when you pop the cork!

    1. 19 Crimes The Uprising Red Wine
A fun glow in the dark bottle especially for Halloween. This wine pays homage to Australia's "rum rebellion" of 1808. A portion of this wine has thus been aged for 30 days in rum barrels and is dark with jammy flavours. Sainsbury’s, on offer from £10.50 to £8.50

    2. Tedeschi Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore Capitel San Rocco 2019

Rich and complex. The word Ripasso means this wine has had something very special happen to it. In the second fermentation the wine is passed back over the Amarone grape skins- resulting in a fuller-bodied wine with aromas of cherries, blackberries, and a hint of vanilla, while the palate is rich and velvety with a long finish. This is a tasty wine, not as full blown as Amarone or as expensive, so a good result. The Wine Society - £16.50

    3. Quimay Valle De Eco La Consulta Malbec 2022

A favourite Malbec of mine to enjoy with a roast dinner. It is so easy to drink - concentrated and elegant. Deep purplish crimson in colour beautiful fresh blueberries and violets with a refreshing long finish, leaving you wanting more. The Wine Society - £13.95
