Kitchen mistake? The worst place to keep your wine

Where do you keep your wine? 🍷

The worst place in the house to store your wine is the kitchen.

It’s the spot many of us use, with bottles lined up on the counter or sitting in a rack on top of the fridge. But actually, it’s one of the worst environments for wine.

Why? Because temperature fluctuations are a wine’s enemy, and heat from kitchen appliances can affect the quality and longevity of your wine.

Instead, keep your bottles somewhere cool and consistent, away from heat sources, such as under the stairs, in a shaded corner, or ideally, a wine fridge.

Your wine will thank you later!

The Wing-Woman Wine Club hosted by Elizabeth Hawthornthwaite, Monday 3rd November 2025

Wing Woman Wine Club, Bordeaux Edition 🍷

October's Wing Woman Wine Club session was one of my favourites yet.

What started as a small group of curious wine lovers is quickly becoming a real community, sharing restaurant menus, suggesting wines to decode, and bringing so much enthusiasm to every conversation.

Our theme was Bordeaux, a region famous for its variety, from prestigious names like Margaux and Lafite to some of the best value-for-money wines in the world.

We explored why Bordeaux has such a polarised pricing strategy, and how not to be intimidated by it.

    Elizabeth’s top tips for Bordeaux:
    1. Look for “Bordeaux Supérieur”, this label denotes stricter rules, longer ageing (minimum 12 months) and shows consistent quality
    2. Great recent vintages: 2018, 2019, 2020. Delicious now; no need to cellar
    3. Cru Bourgeois is a Médoc quality classification that’s all about reliable excellence and value today

Join the next Wing-Woman Wine Club (we meet the first Monday of every month). Save the date: Monday 3rd November from 6:30pm

Where great wines meet great women

I’m proud to be Platinum Magazine’s Wine Journalist, with my Wine Club column dedicated to celebrating female winemakers from around the world.

In this month’s issue, I’m shining a light on two women I admire:

✨ Sam O’Keefe, from Lismore Vineyard in South Africa - we explore her barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah
🍇 Giulia Negri, from Piedmont in Northern Italy - one of the rising stars of Nebbiolo

I’m never happier than when I am championing women in wine. It’s where I feel a natural affinity and alignment and it’s what drives so much of my work.
