Last week, I had an incredible opportunity to dive into the world of wines in a way I hadn’t experienced for some time, a blind wine tasting at The Colony Grill Room. Whether you're a budding wine enthusiast curious to learn more or a seasoned connoisseur, a blind tasting is always a challenge. I attended with my mum and we were both captivated as the sommelier Antonio presented each wine, turning our evening into an exciting guessing game.
The Thrill of the Unknown
Here's how the magic happens: Antonio pairs three wines, each shrouded in mystery within a black canvas bag, with every course of the meal, starters, mains, and desserts. "Blind" tasting means the labels remain a secret, challenging you to identify each wine as it complements your dish. Antonio then revealed the wine’s identity after each course.
A Modern Spin on Wine Learning
Blind tasting is an innovative and engaging way to deepen your understanding of wine. It always sparks lively discussions and teaches you something new. The wines we sampled were reasonably priced - as ever, good wine doesn't need to come with a hefty price tag. Prices are from £50 per person.
A Sparkling Surprise from Piedmont
Among the evening's highlights was a genuine discovery for me, a sparkling wine from Piedmont. This wasn't the Asti Spumante we're all familiar with. Instead, it was a sophisticated traditional method sparkling wine (yes, akin to the Champagne method), crafted from the Gattinara grape. Brought to us by Tavaglini, a renowned family and a leading name in sparkling wine production, this revelation was a reminder of the endless variety that the world of wine has to offer.
