Hello. Here I am in London, and here's my wine. Hello. I'm Nick Christianson, chief winemaker, Elandstone. I'm Elizabeth from Elizabeth of Wine, and we're in the middle of London, Tottenham Court Road, enjoying the music. Are you finding London busy? Yes. It's quite a change from Marlborough. Yep. Nat, why are you here this week? It's been a very exciting week. On Tuesday night, it was the award ceremony for the international wine challenge, and I won white winemaker of the year. What did you do before you became a winemaker? I did a few things, but basically, I studied a music degree. I'm a trained double bass player, and I was really interested in composition. And then I ended up picking up a psychology degree, and I ended up working in HR for eight months and really didn't like it. And, yeah, while I while I was doing a master's degree in psychology, I was a volunteer firefighter and also had a part time job working in a wine bar. And Wow. That's what I did. Yeah. Super hero. I don't know about that. You mentioned the study of music. Do you use music and wine together? I do, actually. I had a trial going on in our barrel hall when we had some penile aging, and I had a mantra on repeat, the Gayatri Mantra, and it's for kind of purity immunity. And, yeah, I had that playing on repeat for six months. Wow. And, yeah, just getting those good vibrations into the wine. Who doesn't love good vibrations? I'll choose to that. I'm drinking some beautiful wine. What am I drinking? It is the Yellens Reserve twenty twenty two Sauvignon Blanc. What can I expect in my glass? Lifted notes of black currant leaf, a lot of passion fruit. And once you actually take a sip, beautiful racy acidity with some really plush tropical notes coming through the palate. It's really precise, really big, almost delicious. Oh, good. What is your Desert Island wine, please? It's a tricky one, but champagne of any sort. Also, I really love Albireno as a style and as a varietal. We've just released our first Albireno, which means a lot to me because because before working at Yealand's, I was living in Spain in Galicia and Raspail. I was just making Albireno. So it's beautiful to be using that classic Spanish varietal back in back in New Zealand. Oh, I can't wait to try it. Thank you. You're welcome. It's a really hot day in London, 29 degrees. What would you be drinking? I'd say an ice cold GNT. Very nice. Very gritted. Thank you. Can you tell me more about the label, please? Yeah. It was quite a fun project, actually. So we've got a lot of wildflowers and native plantings on our property, and we wanted to bring some of those sort of stories to life on our label. I went around the vineyard one winter and went foraging with some photographers as you do. So everything that's on this label is a true image of an item that we actually have growing around around our winery. Can you tell me why we have a screw cap? Mhmm. Please. New Zealand were very early adopters of the screw cap. And, basically, with the screw cap, you get a lot of consistency. Under cork, you can get variation, and you can get sort of oxygenation, and you can also get some sort of cork tank sometimes. Screw cap, very standard, very safe, very precise, and very uniform. So we we like that in Zealand. New We like keeping our fresh vibrant wines free... Fresh and vibrant. I must say your wines are very fresh and vibrant, and I love that I can literally come home from work and easily open this in a second and drink. It makes me very, very happy.
