There’s always excitement around a new restaurant opening, but every now and then one arrives that feels instantly settled, as though it has always belonged. Cometa on Charlotte Street is exactly that.
Bringing together the best of British seafood and bold Mexican flavours, it’s the kind of place designed for long lunches that turn into dinner, good conversation, and perhaps one more bottle of wine than originally planned. It’s also wonderfully dog friendly, which only adds to its charm.
In the glass was Domaine Borgeot Bourgogne Chardonnay 2021. Produced by a family-run estate in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, it was everything I look for in an approachable Burgundy Chardonnay.
Bright citrus fruit, gentle oak and a lovely texture, with enough freshness to keep you reaching for another sip. Elegant and beautifully balanced, it complemented Cometa’s vibrant, coastal-inspired dishes perfectly.

The kind of wine that quietly gets on with the job while making everything on the table taste even better.
What I enjoyed most about Cometa was the balance. The menu is full of bold flavours, but nothing feels overwhelming. The seafood remains the star, with the Mexican influences adding energy, freshness and character. It’s fun, relaxed and exactly how I want to eat right now.
With excellent food, a thoughtful wine list and an atmosphere that encourages you to stay a little longer, Cometa already feels like a welcome addition to Charlotte Street. The sort of place you visit for lunch and end up leaving long after dark. I certainly could have stayed all night.
