There are very few restaurants I return to again and again. London is full of exciting new openings, but every now and then you find somewhere that simply gets it right. For me, that’s Sune in London Fields.

Warm, intimate and quietly confident, it’s the kind of restaurant where everything feels considered. Nothing is overworked or overly complicated. The food is thoughtful, the atmosphere relaxed, and the service always feels genuine.

On this visit, the wine was every bit as memorable as the food.

We started with a bottle of Comte Senard Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru “Sous Frétille” 2015. This is exactly why I love mature white Burgundy.

Still wonderfully fresh, but beginning to show the complexity that comes with age, it offered layers of citrus, stone fruit, minerality and a subtle savoury note. There was plenty of depth, but also a lovely tension running through the wine that kept everything beautifully balanced. Elegant, expressive and incredibly easy to keep returning to.

One of the things I love most about Sune is the way the cooking feels effortless. The dishes are refined without feeling fussy, allowing great ingredients to take centre stage. Every plate feels carefully considered, yet never showy.

It’s a style of cooking that works particularly well with wine. Nothing dominates, everything feels in harmony, and the result is a dining experience that encourages you to slow down and enjoy it.

And because some traditions are worth keeping, we finished with espresso martinis.

Rich, smooth and just indulgent enough, they were the perfect end to a wonderful evening.

It’s rare to find a restaurant that feels as consistent as Sune. The food is excellent, the wine list is full of temptation, and the atmosphere strikes that difficult balance between special and relaxed.

In a city with endless choice, it’s one of the few places I find myself returning to time and time again. And after another wonderful dinner, I can safely say it won’t be the last.
