    Visiting Fontodi Winery, Tuscany, Italy

I must confess to loving wines made by Macro and Giovanni Manetti at Fontodi wine, they are just the most charming sweet men and couldn’t be kinder.

Fontodi is a revered boutique winery nestled in the heart of Tuscany's Chianti Classico region, Italy - a destination I highly recommend visiting for any traveller and of course wine enthusiasts.

With a history tracing back to the 16th century, Fontodi initially served as a farm. However, it was not until the 1960s when the visionary Manetti family took ownership that the estate's emphasis shifted towards viticulture and winemaking. Since then, under the dedicated stewardship of Dino Manetti's family and friends, Fontodi has flourished into one of Chianti's finest wineries.

Encompassing approximately 130 hectares, Fontodi’s vineyards are at a range of altitudes and with various soil types - an ideal terroir for producing Sangiovese, the quintessential grape variety of Chianti. In addition to Sangiovese, Fontodi also nurtures other traditional grapes like Canaiolo and Colorino, alongside international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Fontodi embraces both quality and sustainability and has therefore earned a solid reputation in the wine industry. Their wines are celebrated for their harmonious balance, elegant character, and distinctive expression of the terroir in which the grapes are grown.

But which Fontodi wine should you try?

    • Fontodi Chianti Classico: As their flagship offering, this wine beautifully encapsulates the classic essence of the Chianti Classico region, primarily crafted from Sangiovese grapes.

    £23.99 from House of Malt.

Other Fontodi wines with amazing reviews that I'd recommend exploring are:

    • Filetta di Lamole: For a departure from their renowned reds, this white wine is produced from grapes grown in the nearby Lamole area, showcasing Fontodi'sversatility beyond red varietals.

    £24.90 from VINVM.

    • Vigna del Sorbo: This exceptional Sangiovese-based wine exemplifies the full potential of Fontodi's terroir, sourced from a single, outstanding vineyard. £70 from VINVM.

    • Flaccianello della Pieve: An exquisite Super Tuscan wine lauded for its excellence. Made from 100% Sangiovese sourced from the finest vineyard plots. £140 from Selfridges.
